10 Tips On How To Avoid Burnout And Stay Balanced
Feel as though life is getting on top of you? In this article, Beauty and Tips reveals the top 10 tips on how to avoid burnout and stay balanced.
We’re all striving for harmonious work/life balance. But in an increasingly pressurised world, burnout is becoming normal. In one sense, that’s good news – at least you know that you aren’t the only person who is struggling with this. On the other hand, it’s totally rubbish. After all, burnout is characterised by irritation, annoyance – and sheer exhaustion. You just want to sleep and do nothing for a whole year. You’re done! You want to disable your social media accounts, turn your phone off, and put your other half on permanent mute. Lots of people these days suffer from burnout, even those at the very top who otherwise seem invincible to us. A lot of the time, it’s because we work ourselves into the ground without giving ourselves a break. Let’s take a look at 10 tips on how to avoid burnout and stay balanced.
Rest!
This one sounds so simple. But if it’s really so simple, how come you haven’t rested yet? Because as you fully know, a lot of us have forgotten how to rest in 2017. We’re in the middle of the rat race, we’re constantly switched on, firing off emails in the middle of the night and responding to clients during our vacation. The word “rest” has been removed from our dictionaries. It’s time to put Rest back in there with a capital “R.” Because you deserve it.
Forgotten how to rest? Spend an hour here and there getting lost in a good book. Go for a walk, visit a day spa, or simply tune out. Turn everything off and just curl up on the sofa for a bit. Bliss!
Ask For Help
This is another good tip on how to avoid burnout. Sometimes we burn out because we’re too proud to ask for help. We want to do everything ourselves. Because we know we’re the best at it! It’s time to ask for help. There are plenty of talented, skilled people out there who are willing to give you advice and support you. All you have to do is ask.
Sleep More
Are you getting enough sleep each night? Or are you of the sentiment that sleep is for the weak? Or perhaps you’ll sleep when you’re dead? Experts tell us that we should aim to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. Of course, not everyone aims for this figure. A lot of people claim to be able to thrive off just six hours per night. But while they might be thriving some of the time, that lack of sleep will eventually catch up with them and cause burnout.
To make sure you are fully alert and in the game each day, give yourself a fighting chance of keeping burnout at bay by sleeping for at least eight hours a night. Switch your devices off at a reasonable time and be kind to your body. Get into bed earlier, catch up on some much needed sleep and restore your energy.
Say No To People
One of the reasons burnout happens is we take on too many tasks. Scared of upsetting people or missing out on something, we say Yes to everything that comes our way. What happens? We get stressed. We can’t cope. We’ve got a million tasks to do, but because we said we’d babysit for our friend, we have to put our tasks on hold and go and look after some brats instead. So one of good tips on how to avoid burnout is to to put yourself first and be selective about what tasks you take on. Putting yourself first doesn’t make you a bad person. It just means you’re using your common sense. Other people sure aren’t afraid to be a bit selfish. So why should you be? Stand up for yourself, be assertive and say No to more people.
Take Mini-Breaks
Some of us are very good at taking a vacation…And some of us are very bad at it! (we’re looking at you!) If you’ve not taken a break for a while …Oh Dear, TAKE A BREAK. One of great tips on how to avoid burnout is to go away for weekends. Get away from the office and spend some quality time with those you love.
Take Mini-Mini Breaks.
Each hour, take a 5 – 10 minute break, it’s another fabulous and creative tip on how to avoid burnout. Walk to the vending machine. Chat to anyone who’s free. Listen to your favourite music.
Quit Multitasking
Why do we multitask? To save more time and be more productive. However, this isn’t a good enough answer. The real reason we multitask is because we took on too much to begin with. See above. Those who multitask are already at a disadvantage because they’ve got too much on their plate. They’re trying to save face by working through a few things at the same time. It doesn’t work. Multitasking just makes you even more stressed, and nothing gets done to a high standard.
So another great tip on how to avoid burnout is to focus on one task at a time, and say No to more people (see above!).
Switch Off
Do you go to bed with your cellphone by your pillow? Are you checking emails at 3am when you wake up for the bathroom? Do you literally take your work home with you? All of this can cause burnout. Imagine what happens when you check your emails at midnight just before bed, and a client asks you an important question. You’re gonna answer it there and then, aren’t you? The next day you’ll blame them for emailing you so late. But it’s your fault for checking! The important tip on how to avoid burnout is to simply learn to switch off. Put your devices away at least an hour before bed. This is your time to unwind.
Accept That You Have Limits
It can be very hard for some people to accept that they have limits. Especially in our increasingly competitive world, some of us want to keep on pushing ourselves. The only time we’ll stop is if we full-on collapse. NOT COOL.
So, another one of good tips on how to avoid burnout is to accept the warnings your body is giving you. You’re not superhuman. You have limits. Stop before it’s too late.
Hang Out With The Right People
Lastly, the people you hang out with might be doing you more harm than good. If they work 18 hours a day and push you to do the same, consider if this kind of friendship is what you need right now.
